What does it mean if a creditor tells me my account has charged off?

When a creditor informs you that an account has been charged off this doesn’t automatically mean that you no longer owe the debt or that the debt has been forgiven.

Many times, when a creditor informs you that your debt is charged off that simply means it has been charged off their books and sent (or bought by) to another collection agency.  The remaining balance may still be owed but now to a new creditor or collection agency.  An unpaid debt has a very negative effect on your credit score and may result in legal action if it goes unpaid for too long. If you are not sure how to manage your debt, consult a professional debt law firm.
